We are happy to bring to you 2nd part of ScanMemories report ‘India: Trends in digitising old family photos’. The report is based on an independent survey conducted by ScanMemories with respondents across India. The objective of the survey was to understand in this age of ‘Digital India’ how Indians are taking care of their physical photos.

In the 1st part of the series, we asked the respondents about how they are storing their physical photos.

In the 2nd part of the series, we asked the respondents about the challenges faced by them in digitising their physical photos.

  • According to 57% respondents the topmost challenge in digitising physical photos is that it takes a lot of time to scan photos. According to an earlier blog written by our experts, to scan 2000 photos by oneself requires around 1 man-month of efforts.
  • For 30% respondents, lack of skill and proper equipment is the key challenge when it comes to digitising photos.
  • For 29% respondents, even after investing time in digitising photos, the restored photos are not of good quality. This is a prevalent problem as majority of people are digitising photos on smartphone applications, however the resultant image quality is mostly poor. Further the image resolution is less than 100 DPI (as against 300 DPI/ 600 DPI required for normal usage) and fit to be seen only on small screen of the phone.
  • A shocking fact that came across was, 1 in every 3 respondents (33%) responded that some of the photos are already damaged and are beyond restoration. This is a key challenge we are observing in India where people have already lost their photos to negligence (read ‘The curious case of lost memories’), weather conditions (read ‘5-step guide to protect your photos in Mumbai weather condition’) and time taking its toll on the photos.
